Work Status and Reproductive Functions of Female Workers in Some Small and Medium Scale Manufacturing Industries


Abstract
The Purpose of this study was to evaluated the work status and reproductive functions of female workers of small and medium scale manufacturing industries in Kimpo area.
Four hundred eleven female workers(274 white and 137 blue collar workers) of 450 female workers selected randomly were responded to the questionnaire on work duration daily working hour, daily hour-work time, menstration, gravidity, abortion etc. Chi-squaire test and Student t-test were used to compare the results between white and blue collar workers.
The results were as follows :
1. Means of age, work duration and daily working hours of white and blue collar workers were 31.2 and 46.3 years, 12.3 and 6.6 years, and 9.1 and 10.8 hours respectively. Education level and monthly income of blue collar workers were significantly lower than those of white collar workers, while the differences of house work hours and sleeping hours in two groups were not statistically significant.
2. In menstrual characteristics, there were no significant differences in cycle and pain between white and blue collar workers, while the rate of abnormal period was higher in blue collar workers.
3. In maternal characteristics, the rate of artificial and spontaneous abortion in white and blue collar workers were 28.3% and 22.4% and 14.7% respectively.
In conclusion, in case of small and medium scale manufacturing industries of funiture, paper products, fabricted metal products and rubber products, age, daily working hour, number of gravidity and rate of spontaneous abortion were higher, and education level and monthly income were lower in blue collar workers than those of white collar workers.
It is suggested that more comprehensive and practical health management pro-gramme including maternal health for female workers especially, blue collar workers in small and medium scale manufacturing industries is required.
